Q1: Trichloroethane (TCA) is used as an industrial solvent for metal cleaning, as a reaction intermediate and for other important uses. Sources for air emissions include distillation condenser vents, storage tanks, handling and transfer operations, fugitive sources and secondary emissions from wastewater treatment. This example will estimate the global warming impact of air emissions. Include the direct impact on the environment (from TCA) and indirect emissions from energy usage in your analysis. The following table shows the major chemicals that impact global warming when emitted from the process. Determine the global warming potential (GWP) for the process and the percentage contribution of each chemical. Table: Air emissions (based on 15,500 kg TCA/h process). Chemical Mass (kg/h) TCA 10 CO2 7760 N20 0.14 GWP 100 1 298
