John has been asked by Sam to find a pump to pump water
from a lower reservoir to an upper reservoir that is 12 m above it
at a rate of 60 L/s. He knows that the pump he is currently testing
(pump 1) uses 12 kW of electricity while it’s running. The other
pump he tested (pump 2) has an efficiency of 70.6% and pressure
difference of 118 kPa. By working out the overall efficiency and
the pressure difference between the inlet and the exit of pump 1,
should John tell Sam to choose pump 1 or pump 2? What do you
notice about the pressure difference between pump 1 and pump 2 and
why do you think that is?
