Antibiotics are used to treat bacterial infections. Someantibiotics target only very specific subspecies of bacteria, whileothers kill a wide range of bacteria, including bacteria in ourintestines. One of the main side effects of broad-spectrumantibiotics is diarrhea (watery bowel movements).
Think about the functions of the large intestine and thedigestive activities of the bacteria that livethere. Explain how diarrhea could occur as aresult of killing off a large number of your large intestinebacteria with antibiotics. (Hint: discuss this interms of normal osmosis in the large intestine and how that mightchange if bacteria are not doing their jobs... which could meanadditional nutrients remaining in the intestine instead of beingabsorbed)
