Go to the pbs.org website as the activity appears at https://ca.pbslearningmedia.org/resourc ... the-family.. I want you to explore the tutorial there called "All in the Family". It is a nice interactive introduction to some of the ideas we've been reading about in class. The tutorial is good, but not that "intuitive" in its use. As you work through the parts of the tutorial, please look for the answers to these questions and submit them to me for grading. They are designed to ensure that you have fully explored the tutorial more than anything else: 1. In the first animal comparison, you are asked to compare the anatomy and evolutionary relationships of the wolf, shark, and what other animal? 2. How was the limb structure of the shark different from the other two animals? What does this tell you about their relationships? 3. In extending the first "tree you built, the tutorial added an outgroup to demonstrate the concept of primitive versus derived traits. What animal was the shared ancestor of the shark and wolf? 4. In the next set of animal comparisons, you are asked to build a tree that compares a bear, a raccoon, and what other animal? How that other animal different from the first two? 5. In exploring the second set of animal comparisons, you learned about the three major groups of mammals. What are they, and in what way do they differ, as discussed in the tutorial? 6. In the final comparison, you are asked to compare a human, a sea sponge, and what third animal? To which animal was the human related, and why? 7. In this last tutorial, you learned about a general rule of biological development, proposed by Karl Ernst von Baer in 1828. What was it, and what does it have to do with the notochord? 8. In the embryological anatomy of the human and the sponge, which had gill slits at some point in its early days? Please remember to complete your activity response in your regular word processor to ensure its safety in case something goes wrong. Save your responses on your computer, then copy and paste your responses into the submission window in Blackboard. From there, you can complete any cleanup if necessary to tweak format. Note: If you seem to be having trouble figuring out if you are on the right screen or not, download and view the PDF instructions - there is a screenshot embedded in it that might help you.
