Q10 Free Response 10 Points Individual Song Sparrows crystallize multi-song repertoires. Adult male Song Sparrow repertoires usually include some songs that match those of neighboring territorial males. Discuss this behavior from two different perspectives: 1) proximate-developmental and 2) ultimate-fitness. Specifically: 1) Discuss the evidence supporting the proximate-developmental hypothesis that experience both early (during the first few weeks after hatching) and late (near the time of crystallization) in the song development process affects the crystallized repertoire that results. 2) Discuss the evidence supporting the ultimate-fitness hypothesis that Song Sparrows who include song types in their repertoire that are matches to their neighbors will benefit because they will be able to regulate the aggression level of encounters with those neighboring males. In your answer be sure to define what it means for a Song Sparrow to respond to a singing neighbor with a song type match, a song repertoire match, or an unshared song, and then explain how these different responses would be expected to affect (or reflect) the aggression level of the interaction. Two well-constructed paragraphs are all you need to answer this question well.
