Part A: Background 3. Go to Wikipedia (the instructor has confirmed the accuracy of the articles related to these compounds) and research both compounds. For each compound: a. Provide the name(s) of both compounds and research the history of their discovery and/or chemical synthesis. (3 to 4 sentences) Clausde Louis Berthollet discovered Potassium chlorate, it is a compound that can be used as an oxidizer, disinfectant, and a source of oxygen. You can make potassium chlorate from common house hold bleach and salt. Chemist Joseph Wilbrand discovered TNT in 1863, but it was not known yet to be an explosive until almost 30 year later. It was actually first used as yellow dye by German chemist Julius Wilbrand. b. Identify the name of the compounds by researching the various names they can take and listing them. Which is the most common name? Which is the "correct" name? Explain. The different names of TNT is TNT, Dynamite, Gelignite, Nitroglycerin, and Trinitrotoluene. The correct name for TNT is Trinitrotoluene the reasoning for it is because TNT or what we call dynamite is an explosive and we didn't figure that out until 30 years later. This is the scientific and proper name for TNT. Potassium chlorate is also known as Fekabit or Kaliumchlorat. The common and correct name of this substance is Potassium chlorate, it is the most commonly used name in chemistry due to is being so flammable when mixed with combustible materials. The compound contains potassium, oxygen, and chlorine. For the ionic compound, identify the naming system used for the compound. Is there an alternative name using the out-of-date-iç, -gus system? d. For the covalent compound, provide its IUPAC name. Explain what an IUPAC name is and what it can convey about the molecule. e. Include an image of the Lewis structures for both compounds, showing all atoms and attached hydrogens if any. Add in any lone pairs of electrons if necessary, to finish the Lewis structure. f. Provide an analysis of the Lewis structure by explaining the process you would go through to draw the Lewis structure, including the number of valence electrons used and the rational for any formal charges or multiple bonds present. Make sure this is in your own words. C.
