Bob Knowlton is project head of the photon laboratory and wasdetermined to produce work that would put him ahead in his career.As the leader of the team, he was known for staying at the lab andworking late, long after the rest of his team had gone home.Knowlton’s boss, Dr. Jerrold, told him during his interview, "Theperson who produces gets ahead in this outfit,” and “The sky’s thelimit for people who can produce!” It seems that message reallystuck with Knowlton.
Things start to change when Knowlton’s boss and head of thelaboratory, Dr. Jerrold, assigns Simon Fester, a highly qualifiednew team member, to Bob Knowlton’s team. Fester quickly makes hispresence known and gets to work on finding solutions to existingphoton laboratory problems, which rubs Knowlton the wrong way. Hecould see Fester “producing” very quickly and stepping into thevery leadership role he once held. In Knowlton’s mind, this newteam member, though brilliant and a great asset to the team, wouldthreaten the chances of him getting the promotion he was aimingfor.
Fester came in with fresh eyes and a unique, skilled background,and believed there were new ways to approach the problems at thelab. Unfortunately, though, Fester’s presence began shifting thedynamic of the rest of the team. Knowlton and his team had a great,collaborative system in place before Fester joined the lab. WhenFester joined, he quickly closed out the other members of the laband made the lab focused on his own initiatives, questioning theteam’s past work, wondering why they had reached a stopping point.Knowlton and the rest of the lab slowly felt left out of theprojects because of the condescending tone that Fester often used.The team did not feel confident or safe discuss the projectsopenly, and it led to distress.
Bob Knowlton chose to keep his annoyances about Fester tohimself and not share those thoughts with his boss, Dr. Jerrod.Knowlton quietly explores the possibility of working elsewhere andultimately accepts a position at another lab with better pay andbetter prospects. Knowlton figured that Fester was gunning for thesame promotion he was, so he lost his motivation and drive when hecould see that Fester was a star player.
Meanwhile, Dr. Jerrold planned to move Fester to a differentteam and keep Knowlton as the leader of this current team. Knowltondidn’t know this because he never had any conversations with hisboss about what was going on in his head. Jerrold wassurprised as he thought that Knowlton was productive, happy, andsatisfied in his role and now he felt aggrieved about thesituation.
