Read "Why America is Self-Segregating" and then paraphrase a portion of Boyd's essay and explain it. Aim for 100-150 words. How do I do this? Remember: a paraphrase still needs a lead-in and citation. Your explanation of the paraphrase can be a connection, an agreement/disagreement with what is stated, a personal or observational example, etc. Here is an example: According to Boyd, the United States' military attracts people to sign up for a number of reasons (e.g. travel, job skills, life-purpose, etc.), but overall the end goal for the institution is to build social bonds which are crucial to the function of our society (Boyd). The point Boyd makes here is interesting, however I question how well this works even in the best of circumstances. Not all citizens are required to join the military, and it's unclear how much those who do join, bring those bonds to the civilian world. Certainly, these social bonds work while the individual is in active duty, but the amount of time in or out of the military may influence how well this persists in the person's life.
