Case Study
In 2007, the University of Exeter participated in a workshop runwith the Higher Education Academy in collaboration with theStudents' Guild, and entitled 'Students as Agents for Change'.Staff and student chairs of SSLCs were invited to participate invigorous and open debate about their experiences and to listen todifferent opinions. It was exciting stuff for all concerned, butwhen the discussion ended there was no obvious pathway to takethings forward. The Students' Guild at Exeter plays a central rolein ensuring that student concerns are responded to in effectiveways. Yet it has been apparent at times that there have beenresidual concerns or ideas for improvement that were consistentlyreturned to, but never quite resolved. Moreover, it was essentialthat SSLCs should understand what the issues of theirconstituencies were. Interestingly, it was not always clear eitherto the University or to the Guild how widespread some of theseconcerns were among students, or whether the more eloquent orstrident views of small numbers of SSLC members were trulyrepresentative of the wider cohort. The Change Agents initiativewas a practical response to the ongoing challenge of enablingstudent representatives to be more clear about where change wasmost needed, to be more fairly 'representative', to provideevidence for their concerns and also to enable students to beproactive in bringing about change. In particular, there was a willto view issues as positive challenges to be resolved and tode-emphasize a consumerist approach.
