Problem #1 Part A A reservoir has to be used to store water that can be used for irrigation purposes. The Gross command area consists of 1.5 106 hectares out of which 0.56 10 hectares consists of houses, roads, parking etc. Intensity of irrigation is 90% for Rabi and Kharif. Crop ratio for Rabi and Kharif season is 100 % each. Base Period for Kharif crop is 180 days and for Rabi crop is 150 days. The duty for Kharif season is 1800 ha /cumec; and for Rabi is 1500 hal sumecs. Losses in reservoir and conveyance to farm is 15 % for both seasons. Compute i. ii. Water demand for Rabi crops Water demand for Kharif crop How much water has to be stored in reservoir to fulfill the demand of water on yearly basis iii. Problem #1 Part B A stream of 150 liters per second was diverted from a distributary to water course. Out of these 120 liters per second were delivered to the field. An area of 2.0 hectares was irrigated in 10 hours. The effective depth of root zone was 2.0 m. The runoff loss in the field was450 m2. The depth of water penetration varied linearly from 2.0 m at the head end of the field to 1.6 m at the tail end. Available moisture holding capacity of the soil is 40 cm per meter depth of soil. Irrigation was started at a moisture extraction level of 50 percent of the available moisture. Calculate (1) (ii) water conveyance efficiency, (11) water application efficiency, (111) water storage efficiency and (111) (iv) (iv) water distribution efficiency.
