You are tasked with separating a stream containing 30.0 mole percent ethane and the remainder methane into a product that contains 98.0 mole percent methane. To accomplish this, you intend on using distillation and taking advantage of the different relative volatility of the components. The fresh feed stream enters the process with a molar flow rate of 100.0 gmol/min. The first column achieves a separation with an overhead product containing 90.0 mole percent methane and a bottoms product containing 99.0 mole percent ethane. The overhead product from the first column is fed to a second distillation column. The bottoms product from the first column is a secondary product of the process. The overhead product from the second column is the desired product. The bottoms from the second column has a flow rate of 100.0 gmol/min and is recycled back to the first column.
Degrees of Freedom Draw and label a flow sheet for the problem. Calculate the number of degrees of freedom corresponding to each of the following systems. Assume that no information other than that given in the problem statement is available for each degree-of-freedom analysis.
