QUESTION 1 [25 MARKS] A water yield study was carried out in the Langat River Basin as shown in Appendix 2 for water supply and flood mitigation purposes. The determination of water yield at a specific stream location in the river basin was highly dependent on the amount of precipitation, surface runoff, hydrological losses, and topography of the feeding catchment. Thus, comprehensive study on the hydrological characteristics in the river basin was crucial. (a) For a 630 minutes storm occurred within the Langat River Basin in September, the following amounts of rainfall listed in Table 1 were observed in successive different time interval. The direct runoff produced by the storm at the outlet of the catchment was recorded to be 55 cm. (Example ID: AA12345; X = 4; Y = 5) i) ii) Estimate the q-index of the storm. [15 Marks] Construct a hyetograph of the storm obtained from the analysis in (i), then determine the distribution of the excess runoff for each successive time interval. [5 Marks]
