A truss for a commercial building complex to be built in Whyalla, South Australia, is shown in Figure 4B(a). Seasoned Douglas Fir (Elsewhere) of grade F22, is used to build the truss. The tributary area of the truss is 16m by 4m in plan projection. A roof diagonal in the truss is of size 180x50mm. The roof diagonal requires splicing. The side plates to be used in the splicing are also from Douglas Fir (Elsewhere) and are 180x35mm in size. The unfactored loads that are applied to the member consist of a permanent load of 3kN and an imposed load of 5kN (considered as 5 months duration load). a. Check the splice joint employing 3.15mm diameter nails that are 55mm long, see Figure 4B(b) and b.
