2. Your firm was selected by the City of Ann Arbor to study a major sanitary sewer interceptor that discharges 50% of the City's wastewater to a single treatment facility. The interceptor is a 50-year- old 48-in. pipeline and traverses several challenging crossing including major rail and highway systems. Its burial depth is nominal (less than 10 ft). The total length of the pipeline is 10,000 ft and appears to lie within an existing utility easement. Most of the alignment is accessible to construction equipment, however under 20 ft of soil cover (the renewal method should be able to carry the soil load). The result of your study indicates that the entire pipeline no longer is structurally sufficient to provide any additional years of service and requires immediate attention. A previous consultant recommended that the long-term solution is to dig up and replace the pipeline in its entirety. The Director of Engineering believes, however, that a trenchless rehabilitation alternative such as CIPP, Pipe Bursting, Close-fit and Spiral Wound may offer a better solution. You agree with her conclusion and have recommended this as a capital improvement project. You must now prepare a two-page technical memorandum (TM) that will be the basis for your presentation at the next City Council meeting. The TM should include the following:
a. Summary and background of project b. Objectives, requirements, and scope c. Methodology and rational for method selection d. Recommendations considering technical and logistic aspects If you don't receive approval, the other firm will get the job (30 Points).
