Two steels, A and B, are being considered for use in a 0.4in thick, 30in diameter (thin- walled) pressure vessel. The design criteria is to require the vessel to withstand a reasonably high pressure while maintaining a factor of safety factor of 2 against yielding. Assume fabrication quality and costs are the same for both vessels. Select a steel for this application and a recommended design pressure level. As a secondary consideration, will the steel you select result in a design that satisfies the leak-before-break fracture criterion?
