Figure 1B shows the end wall of a warehouse designed to storedangerous chemicals. The warehouse is built using timber structuralmembers.
Seasoned Slash Pine of Grade F11, with a cross-section of240x35mm is used for the corner wall studs. The height of thecorner wall studs is 5.4m long.
Check the capacity of the corner wall studs which are restrainedat mid-height for buckling about the major axis. Minor axisbuckling is prevented by noggings at 1.8m centres. The ends of thecorner wall studs are held by two bolts. The warehouse is locatedin Australia north of the latitude 16oS where theaverage moisture content is 18%.
The corner wall studs carry the following unfactored compressiveloads: (a) Permanent load = 30kN, and (b) Imposed load applied fora period of a few days and at infrequent intervals and consideredto be of five days duration = 50kN.
In your calculations, assume that short-term (ψs),long term (ψl) and combination (ψc) factorscan be considered to be equal to zero and that the roof isnon-trafficable.
Check the ability of the corner wall studs to carry the appliedcompressive loads.
