The provider orders blood work for a patient. You are assigned to collect the specimen. You look at the chart and take note of the particular health insurance that covers this patient. Unfortunately, you know that this insurer only allows laboratory testing at a specific laboratory. Critically thinking.... As the Medical Assistant, what do you do now? What is your obligation? How do you explain this to the provider? How do you explain this to the patient? Who would you explain this to first? What may happen if you proceed with the lab draw instead of sending the patient to the specified laboratory?
