Answer the following questions after reading the text below:
1.  Do you think that native dance should be taken out of itsoriginal context to be shown to the world?
2.  What advantages and disadvantages can you see in the globalsharing of indigenous dance forms?
3.  Why does Welsh imply that the authenticity of the dance isbrought into question because of global sharing?
4.  What makes a traditional indigenous dance authentic?
Text: In her 2010 book African Dance (publishedas part of the World of Dance series), Kariamu Welsh articulatesthree types of African dance: traditional, neotraditional, andstylized.
Traditional dances are those that originated out of a particulartribal society. These dances function within a society according toits specific customs and rituals. These dances have purpose for theoverall health and stability of the tribal group. The dancesdisplay essential elements of values as seen in the culture.
Neotraditional dances are dances made in the “likeness” of thetraditional dances but lack the same integrated and functional rolewithin a society. These neo-traditional dances (meaning new orrevised versions of the traditional dances) may not be from theoriginal society at all, but rather borrowed and therefore do notadhere to the aesthetic and cultural rules as originallyprescribed.
The stylized forms are those that represent “the best aestheticideals of a particular society.” These dance forms are recognizedby the world at large and have been formalized andinstitutionalized through specific instruction and performances athome and abroad. This practice brings into question theauthenticity of the forms as compromised to serve as entertainmentrather than functional dance in a private society.
