Part C: Latitude and Longitude 6. Write the degree of latitude and longitude for each of the four corners of the map. The first question has been completed for you as an example. a. Southeast Corner Latitude: 42°15' N b. Southwest Corner Latitude: c. Northeast Corner Latitude: d. Northwest Corner Latitude: Longitude: Longitude: Longitude: _Longitude: 83°37'30" W 7. Subtract the latitude on the top of the map from the latitude on the bottom of the map. How many minutes are covered from the north to the south sides of this map? 8. Subtract the longitude on the left-side of the map from the longitude on the right- side of the map. How many minutes are covered from the east to the west sides of this map? Locate Washtenaw Community College on the map. It will not be labeled as it didn't exist in 1965. It will be a series of buildings in purple/fushia located within Section 36 on the map. 9. What is the approximate latitude of WCC? 10. What is the approximate longitude of WCC?
Part D: Map Scale The scale of a map is the ratio between a distance on the map, and the same measured distance on the earth. For example, a scale of 1:100 means that 1 inch on the map represents 100 inches on the earth's surface. 11. What is the scale for this map: _ 12. Every inch on this map would represent_ 13. Using this scale, each inch would represent how many feet on Earth? (Hint: Divide by 12)_ feet _inches on Earth. 14. How many miles would this equate to? Hint: To calculate what fraction of a mile this is, divide your previous answer by 5280, the number of feet per mile: miles. Part E: Using the Scale to Measure Distances To measure distance on the map, mark off the desired distance on the edge of a piece of paper and then measure it against the graphic scale. Note the left end of the scale, called the extension, is divided into tenths. Measure and record the following distances to the nearest tenth of a mile: 15. The width of the map from left to right is:_ 18. What is a contour interval? _miles. 16. The length of the Huron River (use the center of the river, and be sure to follow the curves of the river (it helps to use a string for this) from the left to the right side of the map:____miles. Part F: Contour Lines and Intervals 17. What is a contour line? 19. What is the contour interval on the map (include units)?
Part F: Contour Lines and Intervals 17. What is a contour line? 18. What is a contour interval? 19. What is the contour interval on the map (include units)? Lab: Topographic Maps 20. A contour index is used to help make elevations easier to read. List two properties of these that help one identify the elevation of an area on a map: Page 34 21. What is the elevation of Washtenaw Community College? 22. What is the elevation of Burn's Park? 23. Closely spaced contour lines show a (steep, more gradual) slope. (circle one) 24. Contour lines that form a closed loop indicate what type of feature? (a Itop / a depression) Circle one. 25. A closed loop with hachure marks indicates what type of feature? (a hilltop / a depression) Circle one. Part G: Calculating Slopes The average slope between any two points of a hill, river, road, etc., can be determined using the following formula: Average Slope = Difference in elevation (ft.) Distance between two points (mi.) 26. Calculate the average slope for the Huron River, using the elevation markings given in the river (774 ft. on the western side of the river and 711 ft. on the eastern side of the river): 27. What direction does the Huron River flow? Hint: Water moves from higher elevation to lower elevation.
