Exercises: Define this term's design problem: 1. (0.4 point) Users & Needs - Develop a comprehensive list of specific users (not generic, like "manufacturers"). Characterize each specific user (define their interest in the solution of the design problem). List the needs of each individual user (the functional benefit that the user desires from the solution of the design problem); list by user. Refine the list of users and needs into key users and a combined set of needs. 2. (0.4 point) Necessary Functions - Create a list of necessary functions - those mechanical actions which a device must perform in order to satisfy needs. Associate to needs. 3. (0.4 point) Active Constraints - Create a list of active constraints on the form of the design problem solution. 4. (0.4 point) Engineering Requirement Measures - List measureable engineering quantities, considering the necessary functions and functionless needs, which can be used to specify how well the needs are met. 5. (0.4 point) Engineering Requirement Levels - By functional analysis (apply first principles to what your users need), or by comparison to existing alternative devices (such as have actually been built by others, even if they are intended for slightly different purposes), set design target levels for each ER. State the actual numerical design targets. 6. (0.5 point) Product Design Specification - Present an integrated PDS (Needs, Functions, Constraints, ER Measures, ER Levels).
