The equation of the reaction between baking soda and hydrochloric acid is shown below: NaHCO3(aq) + HCl(aq) → NaCl(aq) + H20(1) + CO2(g) For a university innovation competition, Max tried to use impure baking soda to invent a new antacid medicine to relieve acid reflux. The steps involved in his experimentare as follow: • A 250 ml baking soda solution is prepared using 3.5 g of impure baking soda. • 17.0 mL of 0.5 mol dm HCl is diluted to form a 100 ml of HCl solution. • 25 mL of baking soda solution is pipetted into a conical flask and titrated with diluted HCl, with methyl orange as indicator. Volume of HCl needed to turn the solution pink is 21.7 ml. (a) Calculate the number of mol of hydrochloric acid used in the reaction with baking soda.
