Use the following scenario to create a discharge teaching plan for the patient:
Roberta is a 58-year-old patient that was admitted to the medical-surgical unit three days ago for extremely high blood pressure. Upon admission her BP was 188/102, HR 96, RR 20, SaO2 96% on room air. After receiving IV antihypertensives in the ER, her blood pressure dropped to 172/96. The hospitalist physician started captopril (Capoten) 50 mg tid once she was admitted to the floor. After one day in the hospital, Roberta’s blood pressure has come down to 148/86. The hospitalist physician ordered atenolol (Tenormin) 50 mg bid. After starting atenolol (Tenormin), her blood pressure has decreased to 136/74 and has maintained this normal range. The nurse receives orders to discharge Roberta. Roberta will continue this medication regimen started in the hospital.
