Mrs Wang is the subject of my essay, and while it can be
difficult to spot when conflict is there, it is immediately visible
based on who oversees her symptoms and how the nurse communicates
with her. People are particularly exposed to or vulnerable to loss
of dignity in health care. When a friend of mine was diagnosed with
cancer, she told her family, paced herself, and the family
contacted someone in a higher position to ensure that what had
happened did not happen to anybody else. This case study is about
Mrs Wang, who is in my care has been suffering from dyspnoea,
weight loss, and chronic coughing. Her first language is Mandarin,
she understands and speaks some English, she prefers to speak to
her two sons in Mandarin about her health and well-being. They
accompany her to all appointments and interpret for her in
Mandarin. She's been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer and is
waiting to talk with a physician about her situation although it is
not life threatening but she needs treating.
