E ach year, an estimated 1.7 million patients suf- fer healthcare-acquired infections (HAIs) in the United States (U.S.), with 99,000 of those resulting in death (Institute for Healthcare Improve- ment (IHI), 2011). Of these infec- tions, catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIS) are one of the most common (Rife, 2012). CAUTIs, urinary tract infections (UTIS) related to the placement of indwelling urinary catheters, are caused by bacteria typically orig- inating from within the perineal or colonic flora by transfer from the hands of a caregiver. The bac- teria are introduced to the uri- nary tract either during catheter placement or after placement through the intraluminal or extraluminal route (Mitchell et al., 2011). Bacterial contamina- tion is commonly due to inade- quate cleansing of the perineal area prior to insertion of the catheter tip. Bacteria can also be introduced through the tap of the drainage bag when emptying, or when residual urine is allowed to remain in the drainage bag 011 TL
