Group Project: Understanding Health and Healthcare Disparities
of LGBTQ Persons (VI.H.4) Description Minority populations have
unique health issues and often face disparities in healthcare. As
health information management professionals we are required to be
educated and objective regarding legislation, regulations, and
policies in order to do our part as patient advocates and
custodians of records that must be accurate and thorough records
for all patients. In this assignment, students will gain an
understanding of the health and healthcare disparities faced by the
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer population of the
United States of America. Students will learn strategies for
creating LGBTQ-inclusive and affirmative environments of care.
Students will work as a group (groups assigned by Prof. Shaffstall)
to create programs and materials for clinical and support staff at
their local hospital. Objectives Assess how cultural issues affect
health, healthcare quality, cost and Health Information Management
