Problem 4 At a certain location, the ground elevation is 77.24 m above mean sea level. A 30-cm diameter well is drilled. The soil underlying the ground is sand all the way down to elevation 52.41 m. A thick layer of clay is below this depth. A well screen is installed from elevations 54.00 to 62.00 m, and water fills the well to an elevation of 71.00 m. (a) Make a sketch (a vertical cross-section) that shows the site described in this problem. Assume the conditions observed at this well extend horizontally in all directions (6) What type of aquifer was just drilled through? What is the basis for your answer? (c) How thick is the aquifer? Show any required calculations. (d) What will happen to the aquifer thickness if a pump is installed and 1100 Lpm (L/min) is pumped continuously out of the well? (e) The hydraulic conductivity of the sandy material is 6x10m/s. The well is pumped at 1100 Lpm for a very long time. It is observed that the water level in a well located 35 m from the pumped well drops from the original elevation of 71.00 m to an elevation of 65.24 m, What is the drawdown at another well located 111 m away from the pumped well? Make another sketch showing the new conditions at the site after the long-term pumping. Label the dimensions 35 m, 111 m and also label the drawdown you calculated for part (c).
