Procedure
Prepare a solution of adipoyl chloride that is 5% (W/w)
concentration in cyclohexane; the total volume of the solution
should be 15 mL. (Check your calculation with your instructor
before you. Pour the adipoyl chloride solution into a 50-mL beaker.
Adipoyl chloride will smoke and produce noxious, acidic fumes when
it comes into contact with water, including atmospheric moisture.
Use extreme caution when handling this material. Prepare your 5%
solutions in the reagent hood using a scintillation vial. This vial
should be capped
when transferring the solution from the reagent hood to your fume
hood and the vial should only be opened when it is inside the fume
hood. Prepare a solution of 1,6-hexanediamine that is 5% (w/w)
concentration in water; the total volume of the solution should be
15 mL. Pour the 5% aqueous 1,6-hexanediamine solution into a 150-mL
beaker and add 10 drops of 20% sodium hydroxide solution.
