The density and the molar mass of thorium, which has the FCC
structure are 1.72 g cm-3 and 232 g mol-1 , respectively.
Calculate,
(i) the lattice parameter, (ii) the atomic radius, and (iii) the
packing factor of thorium in FCC structure. (8 marks)
(b) What is meant by the term of thermal stress? A nickel engine
part is coated with SiC to provide corrosion resistance at high
temperatures. If no residual stresses are present in the part at 20
oC, determine the thermal stresses that develop when the part is
heated to 1000 oC. The net difference in the thermal expansion and
modulus of elasticity are 8.7 x 10-6 °C -1 and 60 x 106 psi,
respectively.
