Phosgene, COCl2, was used as a chemical weapon during World War
I and is currently
used as a starting material for the synthesis of other chemical
compounds. Phosgene gas
decomposes into carbon monoxide gas and chlorine gas. Suppose
that 0.250 mol COCl2
decomposes in a sealed 1.00 L container at 1000 K to give 0.0294
mol CO at equilibrium.
a)Determine the equilibrium constant for the decomposition of
phosgene at 1000 K.
b) Calculate the equilibrium concentration of COCl2 after the
volume of the container has
been doubled.
