Question 3 (20 marks) As shown in the below figure, a filament-wound cylindrical pressure vessel of mean diameter d = 1 m and wall thickness t = 20 mm is subjected to an internal pressure, p. The filament- winding angle 0 = 53.1° from the longitudinal axis of the pressure vessel, and the glass/epoxy material has the following properties: Ej = 40 GPa, E2 = 10 GPa, G12 = 3.5 GPa, and V12 = 0.25. By the use of a strain gage, the normal strain along the fiber direction is determined to be εi = 0.001. (a) Determine the internal pressure in the vessel. (b) A tensile test specimen is cut out along the x direction of the pressure vessel. What effective modulus of elasticity, Ex, would you expect to get during a test of this specimen? 1 2 OJ X
