Experiment 1: Changing Time Constant with Resistance Objective In this experiment, we will measure voltage on a discharging capacitor as a function of time to find the time constant of an RC circuit Materials Used • Resistors Arduino Uno board • 3x1 MQ +1% resistors • 1x10 uF 11% electrolytic capacitor • Breadboard Connection wires Procedure Shown here is a picture of the experimental setup for our RC Circuits experiments, A circuit diagram that explains this my be given as shown here.
A circuit diagram that explains this my be given as shown here, 5 V A5 WAO АО R с With this setup, follow the procedure to collect data. 1. Wire the circuit as shown with appropriate connections to the Arduino Uno Start with pin A5 grounded. 2. Connect the Arduino to the computer using the USB port. 3. Upload the program to the board. 4. Open the "Serial Monitor and confirm that data is being taken. There should be 2 readings per second 5. Move the wire that is connecting pin A5 to ground to now be connected to the 5 supply. This is the equivalent to flipping the switch in the circuit diagram above 6. Collect data until the voltage on the capacitor gets to -4,8 V 7. Move the A5 wire back to ground. This is the equivalent of flipping the switch back to the shown position in the circuit diagram above. 8. Continue collecting data until the voltage on the capacitor is -0.1V. 9. Reset the board and change resistance in the circuit 10. Follow this procedure for resistance values of 1 MQ, 2 MO, and 3 MO.
Data Raw data files for the following cases are shown here. These are files with comma-separated values (CSV). The columns are: time in seconds, voltage on capacitor in volts, and current in circuit in HA. • 10 uF 1 MO-5V • 104E-2 MO-5V • 10E-3 MQ-575 Analysis In your analysis of this data, please be sure to address the following 1. Find the theoretical value for time constant in each of these cases. Time constant is = RO 2. Find the data in each of the raw files associated with the discharging capacitor. Plot the natural log of voltage on the capacitor as a function of time for each system. Be sure to include a trendline. 3. Use the slopes of this trendlines to find the experimental time constants for your circuits. Compare these value to that of the theoretical values found 4. Critique the precision and accuracy of the measurements. 5. Identity sources of uncertainty in 1
