question: pork production Pork production in the UK fell by 10% in 2001. Pork prices fell to 75p a kilo from 120p a kilo in 1999. Pig farmers estimated they needed 90p a kilo to break in. The National Pig Association estimated than one in ten of the 4,000 pig producers in England, Wales and Scotland faced going out of business. Others were cutting back significantly the number of pigs they were keeping and breeding. Pig farmers also faced other problems, including extra costs imposed by the need for higher health standards following the BSE crisis and the requirement to fit wider stalls for breeding pigs. Cheaper pork imports increased, in some cases from countries that did not meet the high welfare standards required of UK farmers. To compete with cheaper imports and to cover their costs, UK pig farmers asked the government to subsidise their industry. a Explain and illustrate the effect of: i a change in the price of UK pork in 2001 on the supply of UK produced pigs. [5] ii the extra costs imposed on UK pig farmers on the supply of UK produced pork. [5] b Discuss why, despite the problems faced by UK pig farmers, the supply of pork in the UK may have risen. [3] C Explain, and illustrate, the effect of a subsidy to UK pig farmers on the supply of UK produced pork. [5] d Discuss an influence on the supply of pork not mentioned in the passage. [2]
