Michael recently selected a new health plan. He likes his plan
because the costs associated with his health care are low which
means that he can afford to engage in preventative care. However,
he doesn’t like the fact that he has to get referrals from his
primary care physician (PCP) to see specialists. Michael is a
football player and often requires the services of several
different specialists each year due to injuries he suffers on the
field. For example, he recently scored a touchdown against the
Green Bay Packers, did the “Lambeau Leap” into the crowd, and
severely injured his ankle. However, before he can see a surgeon to
get career-saving surgery he must first go see his PCP to get a
referral. Given this information, what of the following health plan
does Michael have?
PPO
HMO
Third-party payer
Fee-for-service
