Ayanna, aged 15, lives with her mother Naomi and her father
Aldane in a suburb of London. The father, Aldane, is
currently unemployed due to an injury in construction work.
He has begun to drink to excess. The mother is working
two jobs, one as a cashier in a restaurant and one as a school bus
driver to make ends meet. Ayanna has difficulties with anxiety that
has led her to control her eating and she is now very thin.
She also has had periods of depression, but had always managed to
drag herself to school. Lately she has had mornings where she
refused to get up and shared her suicidal thoughts with her mother.
There is a lot of tension in the marriage due to financial
struggles. Further, Naomi’s mother and Ayanna’s grandmother who had
lived with the family and to whom Ayanna was close passed away two
months previously. Ayanna does have a close friend, Zwena, who has
tried to offer her support. The school counsellor was made aware of
concerns about Ayanna’s listlessness in class and tried to contact
the parents to schedule a meeting to discuss how they could all
support Ayanna, but neither Naomi nor Aldane made contact. Because
of increasing concerns about Ayanna’s mental health, she was
