Your 60-year-old uncle has recently complained of shortness of breath and chest pains. He is undergoing an examination by his physician and has asked you to accompany him as his advocate. After the examination and a stress test, he received a summary of his visit and has asked you to help him remember and understand the results of the examination.
During the stress test, the technician placed electrodes for an electrocardiogram (ECG) and recorded data as your uncle performed a series of activities (walking, running, etc). The physician discussed his results with him, but he doesn't have a strong understanding of the processes the heart uses and has asked you to explain the following: . Describe the pathway that electrical signals take through the structures of the cardiac conduction system. Explain how the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system modify this basic rhythm in response to activity, how that benefits the muscles, and what cranial nerve transmits this information to the heart. Explain in your own words what happens during each of the following phases of the cardiac cycle. Include which part of the heart contracts/relaxes, what valves/vessels blood flows through or into, and how each correlates to his ECG chart. atrial and ventricular diastole atrial systole Oventricular systole
