A client admitted with a diagnosis of borderline personality
disorder describes dissatisfaction with her interpersonal
relationships, stating, “My friends seem so wonderful at first and
then they always let me down.” When asked how she responds to this
disappointment, she states, “Sometimes I’m filled with a sense of
overwhelming rage, and other times I just feel so empty.” When
asked to describe how she copes with these feelings, she states, “I
try not to, but sometimes I cut myself. I know I shouldn’t, but I
can’t always stop myself.”
