I really enjoyed getting to read these scenarios. The first
scenario with the Lawrence family reminded me more of my own life
because things were always really hectic for me in the morning
growing up. I related most with Kim because I used to have to get
to school early and make my own lunch so that my mom could focus on
my brothers and get them to school. My brothers have struggled for
years with a lot of anxiety around school to the point where they
have both missed extended periods of school due to their anxiety,
so our mornings are often filled with my mom trying to reassure my
brothers and encourage them to go to school. My mom did still pay
attention and did a lot for me growing up, it was just mainly in
the mornings before school that I felt a little pushed to the side.
Reading the story of the Lawrence family from Fannie’s perspective
helped me see that she was doing everything she could for everyone
in her family and I think my mom was doing the same. I also related
to the part where Otis didn’t wake up in the morning to help
Fannie. Growing up, my dad didn’t help out around the house
anywhere near as much as my mom did, but in recent years he has
really stepped up. That’s why I was really happy to see that Otis
had cleaned up the breakfast mess when Fannie returned home!
I think going to therapy as a family could have made a big
difference for us. We struggled to communicate well with each other
for a lot of my childhood and I felt like I wasn’t allowed to have
problems since my parents were already dealing with so much with my
brothers. I think that we really just needed someone to help us
talk things out and help us understand each other’s perspective.
That could have helped me let go of the resentment that I felt
toward my family a lot faster.
This event in my childhood is what inspires me to be a school
psychologist someday! I have seen the way that a child experiencing
problems around school can impact the whole family and I hope to
give information and help to families and children who are dealing
with problems like this someday. I know that every child deserves
an education and I have seen how much better things can get once a
child receives accommodations at school. My brothers are both now
doing a lot better and being home is much less stressful.
1) state how their story impacted you.
2) ask thoughtful questions.
3) comment that you appreciate them sharing their story.
4) comment something that you learned or never considered
before.
