A duodenoscope is a medical device used during an endoscopic
retrograde cholangiopancreatography procedure which assess and
treats diseases and certain conditions in the pancreas, and bile
ducts. Because the duodenoscope contains many small working parts,
if these parts not cleaned and disinfected properly, it can cause
the transmission of infection from one patient to the other. While
I was reading the article followed by other FDA articles, I was
telling myself why can’t they use disposable plastic parts?
Especially for the parts that are touching the insides of the
patient. While there are always risks with any medical devices, a
proper device design is needed, and it is what contributes to the
reprocessing challenges. There were human factor studies that were
conducted from Postmarket Surveillance from three different medical
companies that manufacture the duodenoscope. Fujifilm, Olympus, and
Pentax portrayed studies that had high rates of contamination and
disease transmission which included organisms such as E. Coli and
Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Because of these high rates of
contamination, I believe that disposable parts can facilitate a
proper and thorough cleaning, reduction in contamination and
transmission of disease compared to a reusable or fixed
endcaps.
