Week 4 Discussion: "The American Family Throughout the Years" In Chapter 5 you read about contemporary patterns, trends, and variations within U.S. families. Some of these patterns, trends, and variations include increased singlehood and older age of first marriage, increased interracial/interethnic couples, delayed childbearing or remaining child-free, increased heterosexual and same-sex cohabitation, increased births to unmarried women, stabilized divorce rates, increased gray divorces, increased blended families, etc... The Week 4 discussion gives you the opportunity to research and contemplate some of the ways today's families differ from families in the 1950s. Conduct research on changes in American families throughout the past several decades. In your post, compare and contrast today's family with the family of the 50s. Identify and compare and contrast some of the problems associated with the family structure in the 1950s versus today. Discuss some of the negative effects of family structure of the 1950s and today. Be sure to cite one or more sources in your post. Attempt to find classmates' posts that focus on changes in the family that you might not have thought or come across in your research. Share your reaction to some of the changes that your classmates discussed in their posts.
