create an information sheet on a topic of your choice related to
a health issue. Follow the prompts on the left side of the figure
creating the introduction, a Broad topic, a Narrow topic, and
Points developed. Follow with your body paragraph to include a
topic sentence, support sentences and then a transition to your
second paragraph. You will continue with your next paragraph that
starts with a topic sentence, support, a conclusion and transition
paragraph to the next paragraph. You will continue with your third
paragraph, starting with the topic sentence, supporting sentences,
and a conclusion sentence. Then finalize the information sheet with
a summary paragraph.
Information Sheet
Introduction: Smoking is one of the most overpracticed
addictions in the world. Most people who smoke admit that it
severely injures their health, but they cannot always explain how.
This information sheet briefly relates some reasons why smoking is
harmful and why it should be stopped at all costs.
Broad topic: Smoking
Narrow topic: Dangers of not smoking; benefits of not
smoking
Points developed: Contents of a cigarette; how a cigarette works
in the body; rewards of not smoking
Body, Paragraph 1 Tobacco wrapped in paper for the
purpose of smoking is a lethal weapon. A cigarette is made up of
thousands of different chemicals including ammonia (cleaning
fluid), nicotine (insecticide), formaldehyde (embalming fluid),
arsenic (poison), carbon monoxide (car exhaust), and methanol (wood
alcohol). Why do people smoke when they know these chemicals are
harmful? Consider how nicotine works in the body.
Paragraph 2 Nicotine hits the brain and makes the smoker feel
relaxed and pleasant. The inhaled smoke carries nicotine into the
lungs. The blood in the lungs carries the nicotine into the heart
and brain—all within seven seconds! Nicotine passes quickly and
easily through the entire body in three days. It leaves the
bloodstream through the kidneys. If nicotine from ten cigarettes
could get trapped in the bloodstream, it would be strong enough to
kill a person. Each year, smoking kills more people than AIDS,
alcohol, drug abuse, car crashes, murder, suicide, and fire
combined. Consequently, people have much to gain by not
smoking.
Paragraph 3 When people quit smoking, their energy
improves, they breathe better, the heart works easier, pulse rate
and blood pressure become lower, and body circulation improves. The
risk of heart attacks and cancer lessens by 90%. More oxygen goes
to the brain and the rest of the body, and the sense of taste and
smell improves.
Conclusion: In other words, the person gets a second chance at a
quality life.
Summary: Cigarettes contain chemicals harmful to the body, even
though those chemicals make a person feel "high." More people die
from smoke-related illnesses than alcohol, drugs, murder, and
suicide combined. After quitting, the risk of a heart attack and
cancer is reduced by 90%, thus providing former smokers with a
new lease on life.
