You are working in an intensive care unit and notice that
although the nursing staff is highly skilled in monitoring patients
and providing complex treatments, they are less attentive to
changing patients’ positions and checking skin status. It is not
uncommon for older patients to develop pressure injuries during
their stay in the unit. You mention this to one of the nurses who
responds, “That is the least of their problems. Our concern is
keeping them alive.” Although you appreciate the complexities of
the care offered, you still believe that patients should not be
allowed to develop pressure injuries while on the unit.
THINK CRITICALLY:
3. Describe the method for determining an individualized turning
schedule.
4. Develop a protocol for the prevention of pressure
injuries.
