Data for calculating % sulfate in K2SO4 Mass of weighing paper and K2SO4 1.42 g Mass of weighing paper 1.02 g Mass of K2SO4 0.40 g Mass of Filter paper + BaSO4 (precipitate) 3.56 g Mass of Filter paper 4.11g Mass of BaSO4 0.55 g
1. for potassium sulfate weight of weighing paper and K2SO4 weight of weighing paper weight of K2SO4 2. for barium sulfate weight of filter paper and BaSO4 Ist heating 2nd heating 3rd heating average weight of filter paper weight of BaSO4 Report I. Calculations (show work) 1. Determine the weight of sulfate in your sample of BaSO4. 2. Calculate the % (by weight) of sulfate in your sample of K S04. This is an experimental percentage. 3. Find the "true" % of sulfate in K S04. 4. Report the accuracy of your result, expressed as % error.
II. Problems (show work for 2. and 3.) 1. List two possible sources of error in the experiment. Clearly explain how each error would affect your calculated result, i.e. would the % of sulfate in K2SO4 be higher or lower than it would be without the error? 2. A compound containing uranium and fluorine weighed 1.760 grams and was treated with excess calcium nitrate. The precipitate of CaF2 which formed weighed 1.170 grams. What was the % of fluorine in the original sample? 3. A 2.50 gram sample of a compound containing sulfur was treated with nitric acid to convert all the sulfur to sulfate. The sulfate was then precipitated as barium sulfate in a procedure similar to the one you performed. The barium sulfate sample weighed 0.73 grams. Calculate the percentage of sulfur in the 2.50 gram sample.
