A student club tries to promote the recycling of plastic caps
and to accumulate funds. The club decides to put 10 recycling bins
(specific to corks) in different places on campus. After a month,
the traffic jams are counted. Let Ni be the number
of plugs in the trash bin. Suppose all the caps are the same. To
get an idea of Ni, mark one of the corks and put it back
in the trash. Then we do draws with replacement until we get the
marked cork. Let X be the number of draws where we obtain the
marked cork.
a) Define the random experiment(s) and the set of possible
results associated with this Ni tail inspection
rule
b) If we define a random variable for the rule, what will the
probability distribution of X correspond to? Specify the
parameter(s).
c) Explain how this rule can be used to estimate the size of
Ni
