During pregnancy a new non-invasive prenatal test, or NIPT, screens for Down syndrome in a baby. The NIPT is highly sensitive and detects 98% of cases of Down syndrome. But it is still a screening test and only tells you whether there is an increased risk of having a baby with an abnormality, it does not give you a definitive answer. (A definitive test is available however, it increases the risk of miscarriage, and so is only offered to mothers who receive a positive result from the NIPT). 0.35% of all NIPT result are positive suggesting increased risk of Down syndrome while 99.65% results are negative. 1) The probability of both a positive result from the NIPT and a case of down syndrome is [ Select ] 2) If there are 360,000 pregnancies in Australia per year, then we expect to observe BOTH a negative result from the NIPT, AND and a case of down syndrome [ Select] times.
3) If the NIPT gives a positive result the probability that the baby does NOT have Down syndrome is [Select ] 4) This example illustrates [Select]
