The equilibrium vapor pressure of Hg at room temperature is
about 1.6x10-6atm. Image an old chemistry lab that, through liquid
Hg spills over the years, has accumulated enough mercury in cracks
in the floor, etc. that Hg liquid-vapor equilibrium has been
established. What is the concentration, in units of miligramsper
cubic meter, of elemental Hg in the air of the room at 20oC? Does
this value exceed the limit of 0.05 mg/m3established by the
American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists for safe
exposure based on a 40-hr workweek?
Ans: 13.4 mg/m3, exceed the limit of 0.05 mg/m3
