PART 1: I would like you to choose ONE of the following
prompts to respond to about health traditions and
practices:
1.) Visit, talk with, and/or find out more information about a
holistic healer, a traditional healer or practitioner of
Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) (i.e. Homeopathic
practitioner, herbalist, Reiki practitioner, Santeria, Curandera,
traditional midwife, acupuncturist, Ayurvedic healer, etc.) in the
Cleveland area. How might one even go about finding a healer?
Share with us how you went about locating the healer. Once you have
located the healer, find out as much information as you can about
this healer. What communities does the healer serve? What
illnesses/ailments does the healer treat? What are the types of
HEALTH care available in this practice?
OR
2.) Explore the history and use of beads. What part do they
play in the maintenance and protection of HEALTH?
OR
3.) Tell us about any practices that you or your family members
use or have used. Have you ever sought alternative therapies? What
was your experience?
OR
4.) Tell us what you learned from watching the film New
Medicine. What surprised you? What do you think of the
scientific research into these therapies?
PART 2: Please respond to the following questions based
on Bonder and Martin's Ch. 7.
Reflecting on Bonder and Martin CH. 7, how do clinician values
affect clinical encounters? How are clinician values affected
by professionalization? Can you give any examples from your
own experiences? Have you ever thought about "science" or
"medicine" as having its own culture?
I would like you to think critically about the "mask
of objectivity" in medicine that allows for us to think of it as
somehow outside of 'culture.' Think also about what we have learned
about having an ethnographic mindset during the clinical
encounter.
