The picture below have titles for each experiment
method. There are at least two pictures of each petri dish to help
you identify the bacterial counts and different types of bacteria.
You can increase the size of the images by using the magnifying
icon at the bottom of the screen if you are viewing these in Google
Drive. You can also download and increase the size by selecting the
Zoom Level in the lower right corner of the Word
document.
Plate 1: Dirty Hands
Plate 2: Rinsed with water only – no drying
Plate 3: Antibacterial hand gel – no drying
Plate 4: Hand soap only – no drying
Plate 5: Hand soap and dry with paper towel
Plate 6: Hand soap and dry with four-day-old
towel
Plate 7: Hand soap and dry with clean hand
towel
Lab Report
Based on the growth on the petri dishes linked above,
document the results in Table 1. Use Scientific notation to show
the numbers in the table (refer back to the lab resources in Week 1
if you need help). If there is no growth on the plate, enter 0. If
there are too many colonies to count (more than 250 colonies),
enter TNTC.
Table 1:
Plate Number
Plate Name
*Number of types
of bacteria
Total number of
bacterial colonies
1
Dirty Hands
2
~6.3 x 10^1
2
Rinse with Water Only
5
~6.2 x 10^1
3
Water Plus Antibacterial Gel
2
TNTC
4
Hand Soap No Drying
5
~1.08 x 10^2
5
Hand Soap and Dry with Paper Towel
2
TNTC
6
Hand Soap and Dry with Dirty Hand Towel
3
TNTC
7
Hand Soap and Dry with Clean Hand Towel
5
TNTC
*Number of types of bacteria means how many different
types of microbes are growing on the plate. For example, if the
plate has multiple small off-white dots and the dots all look the
same, that is one type of bacteria. If the plate has multiple small
off-white dots, a colony of dark yellow dots, and a fuzzy gray
area, that is three types of bacterial growth.
Purpose of the lab:
Write three to five substantive sentences to describe
the purpose for performing this lab experiment.
Create a graph of the table above and paste it
here:
If you are unsure how to create a graph, please search
YouTube for directions. Search topics are:
How to create a graph in excel.
How to copy a graph from Excel and paste into a Word
document.
Qualitative results:
Thoroughly describe the growth on the plates.
Qualitative means describe how the plates look.
It appears that non-washing and washing your hands with
water are the most efficient treatments (in comparison with using
cleansing products like antibacterial, soap or different types of
towels) to decrease the number of bacteria. It appears that when
you don’t wash your hands, or use antibacterial gel or paper towel
you have less types of different bacteria on your hands than when
you use different products.
