Patient History: A person has come into your
hospital’s emergency department with back pain, a high fever and a
history of urinary tract infections. Analysis of their blood sample
shows monocytosis and neutrophilia, high levels of IL-6 and high
levels of acute phase reaction proteins, including mannose-binding
protein and C-reactive protein. Analysis of their urine sample is
positive for the gram-negative bacterium, Escherichia
coli.
Diagnosis: The patient is diagnosed with
pyelonephritis (a kidney infection), and they are treated with
intravenous antibiotics.
