Q1 - Written response question on Chemistry The 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami natural disaster that occurred on 11 March 2011 triggered a tsunami that caused the flooding of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. The loss of power to the nuclear reactor cooling system resulted in runaway nuclear reactions, reactor meltdowns, and hydrogen explosions that released radioactive material into the environment. At normal operating temperatures of approximately 300°C, a zircaloy cladding that protects the fuel rods is inert. However, above 1,200°C, zirconium metal reacts exothermically with water (steam) to produce hydrogen gas and zirconium oxide. a) In this reaction, does hydrogen get oxidised or reduced? b) The hydrogen gas produced reacted with oxygen to form water. Write a fully balanced chemical equation including appropriate state symbols for the explosive reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. c) The hydrogen gas produced by the reaction between zirconium and water is vented into a headspace measuring 1.5 m x 3.0 mx 4.0 m. The hydrogen gas pressure measured by pressure sensors within the headspace was 12,200 atm while the hydrogen gas temperature was 600° The hydrogen gas then reacted explosively with oxygen forming water. Using this information in conjunction with the hydrogen: oxygen stoichiometric ratios determined from a fully balanced chemical reaction in (b), calculate the volume of water (in litres) produced.
