Cartilage - Fibro This type of cartilage is extremely strong but somewhat flexible. It is found in areas needed for strength to pressure but has "give". It is found forming the discs of the vertebral column, the symphysis of the 2 pubic bones and on the articular surfaces between the femur and tibia. (31) Obtain the slide labeled "cartilage - Fibro" from slot 11/12. Again, it will be viewable under both low and high power. Draw a circle and label what you see. Label the collagen fibers making up the matrix and the chondrocytes in the lacuna. Cartilage - Elastic This type of cartilage is somewhat strong but noted for its ability to stretch and return to its original shape. IT can be found making up the shape of the external ear (auricle/pinna) the epiglottis and auditory tubes. (3m) Obtain the slide labeled "Cartilage - Elastic" in slot 9/10. Draw a circle and within the circle what you observe. Label the chondrocytes and the elastic fibers of the matrix. Bone Bone tissue protects vital organs of the body and provides support. The vertebral column protects the spinal cord and supports the trunk of the body. The heart and lungs are protected by the bony framework of the thoracic wall (ribs). The extracellular components of bone are calcified which gives a clue to its supportive and protective ability. Bone consists of a series of repeating units called Haversian systems (or Osteon). A thin section taken from bone tissue should reveal these repeating units. Using the slide marked x-section compact bone, slot 5/6. examine the units of bone construction called Haversian systems. Examine the Haversian systems with the high power 11
